Matt Pauly AIA, NCARB, is a designer and architect based in Lawrence, KS.
Much of his work has focused on shaxateway; the Chorus tower, a mixed-use residential high-rise tower in San Francisco; and the upcoming 395 3rd Street tower in SOMA. Matt excels at taking conceptual thinking and making it an efficient, quality, on-budget reality; through expertise in client relationships, design technology management, and creative collaboration.
His career has spanned from coast-to-coast. He earned his Master of Architecture from the University of Kansas. While there he interned with Claude Vasconi in Paris, France. He also did research in Kenya for his fifth-year thesis. His graduate degree is from Columbia University in New York City (Master of Science in Advanced Architectural Design), where he continued with research in South Korea.
He began his professional career in the New York office of Samoo Architects, contributing to international design competitions while also teaching at Columbia University. He worked on turn-key competitions such as Garak Market, Taekwondo Center, and the New York Korea Center.
He started working with Multistudio (formerly Gould Evans) 15 years ago. During that time, he has led multidisciplinary teams on developer-led, institutional, and civic projects across the country. He has worked in three different Multistudio offices: Kansas City, San Francisco, and Lawrence. During one summer with his researcher wife, he lived in Copenhagen while continuing his work for Multistudio. As a project architect and senior designer, Matt has contributed to more than 4 million square feet of work across North America.

University of Kansas
KU East Gateway Project
A Multistudio project, the East Gateway Project at the University of Kansas is redefining what athletics on a college campus can be. With Phase I complete and Phase II of David Booth Kansas Memorial Stadium under construction, the mixed-use district will eventually include student housing, two levels of parking beneath a public plaza, a 150-key hotel, condominiums, and a conference center integrated into the stadium itself.
Matt Pauly served as a design lead for the exterior of Phase I and the broader mixed-use development, working closely with KU, Kansas Athletics, HNTB, Edgemoor Development, Sunflower Development, Clark/Dunn, CMI, and the community.
San Francisco, California
Chorus Tower
Chorus is a 26-story mixed-use residential tower in San Francisco’s Market Street Hub, designed to contribute more than 400 homes while strengthening the neighborhood’s cultural and public life. The project integrates the City Ballet School, a 224-seat theater, public lobby bar, and a new urban plaza into a highly active ground floor. Above, the residential tower and nine-story podium respond to the varied scale and complexity of the surrounding Mid-Market and Civic Center neighborhoods.
Matt Pauly served as design lead and project architect for Chorus, helping guide the project from its complex entitlement and design process through construction. Working with Multistudio, Align Real Estate, Turner Construction, the City of San Francisco, and a broad multidisciplinary team, he helped translate an ambitious urban concept into a built project that treats the city and the people who inhabit it as a client.
San Francisco, California
395 3rd Street
395 3rd Street is a 34-story residential high-rise that will bring more than 500 homes to San Francisco’s South of Market neighborhood. Designed by Henning Larsen with Multistudio as Executive Architect, its columnar form draws inspiration from California redwood trees while responding to its position between the lower-scale fabric of SOMA and the taller towers of the East Cut. Street-level retail, a residential lobby, and two new exterior plazas extend the activity of 3rd Street, while three levels of amenities connect residents to the street, city, and bay.
Matt Pauly served as senior project architect and project manager, helping translate the project’s conceptual vision into a highly detailed residential tower. His work focused on coordinating the multidisciplinary team and developing unit layouts, amenities, façade systems, and technical solutions that reinforce the building’s relationship to its San Francisco context.
Kansas City, Missouri
Cerner Innovations Campus
Cerner Innovations is a multi-phase technology campus in Kansas City designed to support Cerner’s growing software development, engineering, and IT workforce. Buildings 1024 and 2048 comprise four completed office towers within a master plan envisioned to ultimately encompass 4.7 million square feet. The workplace is organized into neighborhoods connected by collaborative atriums called “nodes,” providing a variety of environments for focused work, teamwork, and informal interaction while breaking down the scale of the larger campus. Oracle acquired Cerner in 2022.
Matt Pauly served as project architect and project manager from the master planning phase through completion. Working with Gould Evans, now Multistudio, he helped carry the campus vision from its earliest planning through the design and delivery of the completed buildings, maintaining continuity across multiple phases of a large and complex development.
